On Tuesday the 27th of February, we invited City of Trees (part of the Community Forest Trust) to come in to school for the day to help educate the students in how to create a greener healthier space around the school grounds by planting fruit trees and shrubs native to the local environment. Students also had the opportunity to learn “Green Skills” which included; planting and care of trees, the benefits of each species and the essential habitats for wildlife.
Students discovered that trees play an important role in tackling the climate emergency. They are multifunctional, living tools that help make our urban areas more resilient to the challenges of a rapidly changing environment. They can improve poor air quality, cool our cities and towns, lock up carbon and boost our wellbeing, leading to us living healthier and happier lives.
At the Clifton Centre, we now have a variety of fruit trees and shrubs including Wild Cherry, Beech, Crab Apple, Hawthorn and Field Maple. The students conducted themselves in an excellent manner and really got stuck in, getting very muddy along the way! Many thanks to the City of Trees for their help and guidance in what promises to be a long lasting legacy for the centre.
