Since 1997, World Book Day has been celebrated to encourage young people across the world to discover the pleasure of reading. Here at the Clifton Centre, we joined in and embraced the theme of ‘Harry Potter’, JK Rowling’s infamous novels on a young wizard. Staff dressed up as popular characters from the book and Claire prepared some tasty treats for after dinner including chocolate frogs, house themed cookies and lightning bolt shortbread.
Throughout form time, students were informed about the benefits of reading for pleasure and then were encouraged to read a book of their choice for 20 minutes. After some students admitting they don’t read outside of school, this caused some of them to change their minds and even took a book home with them.
